Pedometer or Step Counter

A pedometer, also called a step-counter, is a simple device used to measure the number of steps you take in a day.  This device is a great motivator to move more and sit less.

How does a step-counter work?

When it’s positioned correctly, the pedometer records a step each time your hip moves up and down.

How do I wear it?

Attach the step-counter to your belt or waistband near the front of your hipbone, in line with your kneecap – and get moving!

Facts and Figures

  • 2,000 steps are equal to about 1.6 kilometres, or one mile.
  • 10,000 steps are equal to about eight kilometres, or five miles.

Most Canadians usually do 3,000 – 5,000 steps a day.  When you start be sure to wear your pedometer for three days so you can get an average of your steps. If you have not been very active, you need to increase your step count SLOWLY by adding 500 – 1,000 more each day.

You may wish to talk to your doctor or other health professional before increasing your physical activity.
