Vaping

Vaping is a way of inhaling an aerosol product and then exhaling the vapour. (Health Canada, 2019) This is done by using a vaping device, which may also be known as:

  • Vapes
  • E-cigarettes
  • Mods
  • Juul

Unlike a cigarette, there is no burning when using a vaping device. The devices are usually powered by a battery and can have different removable parts.

These devices generally all work in the same way. The device heats a liquid into a vapour and this is then turned into an aerosol, which is what a person breathes in.

Most substances that people use in their vape devices contain nicotine. The amount of nicotine can vary. Some have lower level while others can have more than a tobacco cigarette.

Nicotine is the addictive part of tobacco cigarettes. Therefore, it is important for people to know that their vape product may also have nicotine.

People who smoke may use vaping as a means to quit smoking tobacco, but since vapes contain nicotine, there are risks to vaping and therefore other smoking cessation options should be explored.

The facts:

  • Vaping is not harmless.
  • Vaping can lead to nicotine addiction.
  • Vaping can cause lung damage.
  • The long-term health impacts of vaping are unknown.
