Teen Health

As young people move through puberty from childhood to adolescence, they experience changes in their bodies and their relationships.

The teen years are spent in search of discovering who you are and experimenting with new behaviours. Teenagers also feel a strong need to belong.

As healthy teens grow, they will learn to have:

  • A positive sense of who they are
  • A connectedness to their family, school and community
  • The skills to make healthy choices
  • The ability to cope with change and solve problems

To help teens grow and be healthy, adults must provide supportive environments at home, school and in the community. Teenagers need clearly defined boundaries and the support of people who love them.

The teenage brain is not fully developed, but is a work in progress. Teens see and respond to the world differently than adults. For example, teenagers are not being difficult because they will not get out of bed; the fact is they require more sleep than adults.
